It really shouldn't need a reset if already running dd-wrt with no problems....but who's to say what your friend may/may not have had on it.

If you used telnet to switch partitions you should be able to flash it. If not you'll need to use serial.

Btw, you never said you couldn't login with telnet or ssh.
