for a while the router responds until the reboot happens. because if you type reboot services get stopped first before the reboot is initiated. this may take 5 - 10 seconds. if you still see then ping ... | |

Removing the ":" does fix the issue. Now the less relevant question is: why did it work for years until now, maybe smartdns changed something on the way the parse parameters who knows.
